I wasn't really sure what to post this weekend, then I searched for photograph to accompany a blog post I had written and I remembered these taken in July 2011 whilst on our trip to Jersey.
I moment I saw these photos again, I knew they were the ones. Located at the Underground War Tunnels. You can read about our trip to Jersey HERE and I wrote four posts about the War Tunnels - Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4
Taking part in Sepia Saturday
Because of the shoe post I read all the posts about the tunnels. Sobering. I'm glad you chose these shoes to share.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kristin. It was very sobering. We visited on a really wet day in July. I might have shared it on one of the tunnel posts, but there is a photograph of an incomplete tunnel which demonstrates the hard work of those men who were captives as we had walked through completed tunnels. It was a lovely break, Jersey is a beautiful island and has protected and recorded it's history well. Watch out for future posts of our second break there during Oct 2011
DeleteI'm glad I read the posts about the tunnels. These boots have a story to tell.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely they do Bob. That is why they were just the shoes to post about.
DeleteI've been to those war tunnels Julie and it's a real eye-opener. Anyone who visits Jersey should try and see them. Very moving.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Nell. I was very moved by what I saw and read, and again after our visit in Oct as we saw a few other things then. It is strange that an Island that I have no family connections to should actually feel of importance to me.
DeleteI initially wasn't going to read your tunnel posts (lazy, or impatient I guess) but I am glad I did. I assume the boots were worn by some of the workers who dug the tunnels?
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoyed reading about Jersey. The items were either donated to the exhibition by Islanders who lived through the Occupation, the workers involved or were discovered after the Occupation ended.
DeleteI have been to Jersey but not to the war tunnels - you are now tempting me to return. I read the rest of your posts on your trip there with interest.
ReplyDeleteWe had a lovely week there. The weather for July was not brilliant, but we did have a few nice days. We were on the plane home and decided to return for another week in the Autumn, and we did in Octobert, staying at the same hotel.
DeleteThe shoe theme has been so interesting ranging from frivolous entries (like mine!!) to heavy thought-provoking ones (like yours!!).
