Weekend Cooking - Wheat Wine anyone?

This recipe is one of my treasured possessions. It is a recipe for Wheat Wine written circa 1965 by my Great Grandmother, Annie Prudence Butcher nee Harris.

  1. How wonderful to have a hand-written recipe from you great-grandmother. Have you tried to make this wine? Have you tasted it?

  2. Wheat wine. how unusual. Have you ever tried making it. I agree, it is very special to have a hand written recipe of your great-grandmother. Have you framed it as a decorative item or do you store it carefully away from the sun?

  3. Just love old recipes, have some for wines made from hedgerow plants that my Mother wrote down. Her kitchen was always full of large bowls full of floating berries or flower heads...

  4. I have never heard of wheat wine. How nice that you have this hand-written recipe. I still have several from my grandmother that I treasure as much for the fact it represents a piece of her, as for the recipe itself.

  5. I have never heard of wheat wine, but I love the handwritten recipe on worn paper :) I saved my Grandma's, too, and have then framed in my kitchen, can just picture her writing them out, too! I can see why that is a very treasured possession!

  8. Thanks everyone for the comments.

It is a real treasure and it currently lives in my study out of the sunlight, although I would love to get it framed.

I have never tasted it. I asked my Mum if she had and she said yes. My Grandfather had a bottle that he had saved. It had been made 10 years previously and the family took it to the wedding of my Mum's cousin. They had it at the wedding. It was so strong Mum said it almost took your head off!

Just where we would buy wheat from locally I am not sure, but will investigate and try and make it.

  11. I don't know why, but it's giving me a feeling of nostalgia for a time I never even lived in.
